About Project AWARE

What is Project AWARE?

Project AWARE (Advancing Wellness and Resilience in Education) is a SAMHSA (Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration) funded initiative focused on the mental health of youth in schools.

What is our purpose?

Project AWARE's purpose is to promote youth mental health awareness among schools and communities and improve connections to services for school-age youth through:

  • Increased awareness of mental health issues among school-age youth.

  • Training educators and other youth-serving adults to detect and respond to mental health issues.

  • Connect children, youth, and families who may experience behavioral health issues with appropriate services.

What have we accomplished so far?

  • Calming Rooms at each school site in the district. These calming rooms are allocated for the overstimulated student who may require an area to decompress and recenter before resuming class instruction.

  • Private rooms for counseling with our trained staff of mental health professionals

  • SPARCS (Structured Psychotherapy for Adolescents Responding to Chronic Stress) group sessions in the secondary setting. These sessions focus on students who may face difficulties with regulating emotions, maintaining healthy relationships, processing new information, and managing other symptoms of chronic trauma and stress.

  • Providing vast resources to students, educators, and administration on how to best serve our youth’s overall mental health.

  • Facilitating community events that bring awareness to mental health assistance for our youth in southwest Oklahoma.

Mental Health Safety Planning

We have safety plans in the event of a fire, tornado, inclement weather so why not create a Mental Health Safety Plan?

A mental health safety plan can help families formulate coping strategies for situations that cause children and teens increased stress and anxiety, as well as identify potential red flags that signal a need to seek professional help.
